Words or images, what works best to communicate our church message?
Here are some blogs that expand on the topic in the video:
Why words and images need each other–the feedback loop of meaning
We’ve all heard the phrase, "a picture is worth a thousand words"– a phrase which I consider one of the most meaningless and destructive phrases to meaningful communication ever coined. That is because without words, the proper response to that statement is, "which thousand?"
I just posted a blog that discusses the importance of carefully crafted words in our church communication (link follows) and this post shows how they work together. Click the following link to go to the rest of the blog:
Why words are more important than images in church communications
No matter what tools we use to create our message; no matter what channels we use to share it, the one thing that never changes is our core content. Our content, permeated with the truth of the entire Bible and culminating with a call to salvation and discipleship in Jesus, must be the anchor of every communication piece we produce.
The obvious question then is: what is the best way to communicate our content?
Here is one of the greatest errors, challenges, controversies, problems—it’s hard to pick just one word—confronting church communicators today and that is the mistaken priority use of images over carefully crafted words to communicate our content. It doesn’t matter what technology channel we use, the issues of the communication value of words vs. images is the same. Click the following link to go to the rest of the blog:

Paul Fournier says
HI, Yvon,
Your name came to mind via a suggested connection on LinkedIn to a Jimmy Prehn, and I was wondering if there is a connection. I pray that you and Paul are both well and prospering.
I am reminded of the volumes of information you shared at VMC a decade ago, and how much of it I preach at other communicators to this day. Thank you!
My favorite 2 take-aways from this post are, “Which thousand words?” and “words tell us what to see in pictures”. Huge nuggets, and again, thank you.
One opportunity I did notice as I was reviewing the video was for the use of images in charts and or even the bars of a chart to help tell the story more vividly. It definitely requires a higher skill set, but it is possible even in Excel, and if you have a main set of statistics to communicate powerfully, that is one way to enhance the message.
Blessings to you. So glad to see you still out spreading your message and staying so current with your tools!
