Church communicators have been entrusted with the words of eternal life. What we do in our communications, can and does, literally change the eternal destiny of the people with whom we communicate.
Contrary to what some current marketing and church communication companies and blogs would have you think with their snappy, snarky articles and catchy images and advice, to create communications that have eternal value is not easy. It takes work; it takes prayer. It takes time; it takes discernment.
Fortunately, help is available if you pursue it.
Proverbs gives us a pattern of the work involved when seeking God's ways of doing things in our lives including our church communications work. Consider the passage below. I have added the emphasis to works that
1 My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
3 indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
8 for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.9 Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair—every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.
Prov. 2:1-11
Challenging words for a challenging task
Note the active work required by these words: accept, store up, applying, call out, cry aloud, look for it, search for it.
If you want to be an effective church communicator, as with every part of your Christian growth, you have to work at it. It isn't easy.
But you don't have to work at it alone. First and always, our Lord is there every step of the way to give us the wisdom we need to do our jobs well and as it says his "knowledge will be pleasant to your soul."
Effective Church Communications is there to help also
Church communications if very serious business and I take the ministry of encouraging and equipping church communicators very seriously. In the next few days I'm working on a Summer Training Schedule that will include training in both the tools and the strategy of church communications. It will be on the companion site to this site: www.effectivechurchcom.com.
It will be a lot of work to put it together and a lot of work for those who study and apply the lessons, but worth every minutes spent if it makes us all better communicators of the words of eternal life.
